Types Of Medicare Supplement Plans Offered In California
To sign up for Medicare Supplement, you must have Original Medicare‡ Parts A and B. Medicare Supplement insurance plans typically are standardized by the federal government. Each plan is named with a letter, like A, F, G, and N. You'll pay a monthly premium that can help you control costs.
The following are brief descriptions of the plans and benefits Anthem offers.
Medicare Supplement Plan A
Most Basic Plan
With Plan A, you’ll pay a lower premium, but you’ll also have to pay a deductible when you go to the hospital. It covers basic benefits, plus some of the highest costs of Original Medicare,‡ including Part A inpatient hospital copayments and coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, hospice care, and preventive care.
Medicare Supplement Plan F
Broadest Coverage For Some
Plan F has the broadest coverage of Original Medicare‡ out-of-pocket costs. You pay your monthly premium. Plan F helps cover Medicare deductibles, some copayments, and coinsurance. Medicare Supplement Plan F is only available to those who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Innovative Plan F is available in California*
Medicare Supplement Plan G
Broadest Coverage For most
Plan G has been one of our most popular plans, and offers the broadest coverage for most people. It will pay for out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare‡ doesn’t cover, except the Medicare Part B deductible.
Medicare Supplement Plan N
Lower Premium
Medicare Supplement Plan N offers a lower premium with some copays and a small annual deductible. Plan N may be your best option if you’re mainly concerned about covering Original Medicare‡ Part A and Part B coinsurance costs.
*In addition to Medicare Supplement Plan F, Anthem also offers Innovative F in California. This Innovative plan includes preventive benefits for vision and hearing, including frames, lenses, and hearing aids. It also includes 24/7 NurseLine access.
After you are enrolled, you’ll need to continue paying your Original Medicare‡ Part A and Part B premiums. For most people, Part A is $0.

When Can I Enroll?
You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan in California anytime if you already have Original Medicare‡ Part A and Part B. The best time to enroll is during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, starting the first month you have Medicare Part B and you’re 65 or older.
When you enroll during this time, you cannot be denied coverage even if you have pre-existing health problems.
If you enroll later, you may be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.
You also can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, starting three months before you turn 65, and ending three months after the month you turn 65.
Add Prescription Drug, Dental, And Vision Coverage
Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, and most do not include dental, vision, or hearing coverage. That’s why you should consider adding these benefits with Anthem standalone plans, including an Anthem Prescription Drug (Medicare Part D) plan for an additional premium.
California also offers Innovative Plan F that includes preventive benefits for vision and hearing, including frames, lenses, and hearing aids, as well as 24/7 NurseLine access.
Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare Supplement Plans
Medigap, also known as Medicare Supplement plans, helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare‡ and is sold by private insurance companies like Anthem. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan can help pay some of the remaining healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare,‡ like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Most people choose Plan F, G, or N. Plan F is only available to those who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
The best plan for you may not be the most popular one. The right plan is the one that provides the benefits that meet your needs, with a monthly premium that works with your budget.
For those with Medicare Parts A and B, a Medicare Supplement plan can pay for out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare‡ doesn’t cover, including:
Your Medicare deductibles
The 20% coinsurance you pay for Part B medical services
Hospital costs after you run out of Medicare-covered days
Skilled nursing facility costs after you run out of Medicare-covered days
You can also go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare patients.
Once you’re enrolled, a Medicare Supplement plan can give you peace of mind knowing that your benefits are guaranteed as long as you pay your premiums.
Keep in mind that the plans with the most coverage will have higher premiums.
Additionally, Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage, but stand-alone plans for these benefits can be purchased for an additional premium.
